Picture Exchange Communication System is utilized by special education teachers as a tool to teach a task through repetition, thern the child is instructed. Autism students with non-verbal skills are provided pictures to express their needs and wants. PECS is also utilized to implement daily classroom routine; for example, Brakfast and lunc menus, Dismissal, daily schedule, school field trips, and social skills. In addition, PECS is initially opening doors as instrument used for teching basic reading. Through picture symbols written left to right Autism students are reading.

ReplyDeleteDoris, your blog entry is very interesting. I have never heard of PECS. I'm quite sure that this teaching tool would be helpful in a general education classroom.

ReplyDeletePECS sounds like something I could use with my non readers. I have never heard of this resource. We have several students that we are working closely with in order to teach them how to read.

I have never heard of this technology, but I am very interested in it. I think it would be a great resource to use with ELL students that speak very little English.
